Valerie Jennings, CEO of JSMM and VBM, Talks Social Media to Startup Companies at BetaBlox

Thank you to Wes Bergmann for inviting our CEO Valerie Jennings to speak at BetaBlox June 11, 2015. Jennings spoke to a diversified group of startup companies about digital marketing, SEO, PR, influencer outreach and more.  The audience ranged from companies such as MMA and wrestling cages to wine and chocolates. Jennings felt right at home with her fellow entrepreneurs since she started her business 12 years ago at the age of 24 in the KC metro area.

Valerie spent time addressing the key differences between B2B and B2C marketing. She outlined what a consumer is looking for when they are choosing a company to buy from online.

  • A strong social media presence
  • Response to customer complaints in a timely fashion
  • An online reputation

One of the hot topics throughout Valerie’s presentation was on driving website traffic. To successfully do this, a company needs to identify and engage with people who will drive website traffic. These people are generally bloggers and influencers. Valerie told the startups at BetaBlox to find out who their specific influencers are and engage with them on social media platforms.

To further drive website traffic, Valerie instructed companies to search for keywords in relation to their brand. This tactic allows companies to find articles related to their industry and create something newsworthy to be noticed relating to the articles. Alternatively, if businesses can’t think of something, they can look in the news cycles and respond to a topic. To do this successfully, businesses can set up twitter alerts which will alert them when a new article comes out regarding a topic the brand may be interested in. Issuing a press release on a targeted topic can give a company PR coverage as well.

Another way to drive website traffic that Valerie discussed is by product pitching. Sending a product to a blogger or influencer related to the industry and ask for a product review. Valerie warned companies to be careful; the subject line for this is half the battle to draw the reviewer’s attention but also maintain it.

At the end of the event, Valerie provided startup companies the basics they needed to launch their digital advertising and social media marketing campaigns, giving startups a greater chance at success.
